Do you ever think about Electrolytes?

Electrolytes work through a fairly elegant system that keeps your cells, nerves and organs functioning properly.

Potassium! (heart and muscle function)

Magnesium! (hundreds of enzymatic processes)

Calcium! (bones, nerves, muscle contraction)

Sodium! (fluid balance)

We at Fern and Frost believe it’s time to prioritize these electrolytes.

And Here’s Why

Electrolytes are minerals, found in many foods, that carry an electric charge when dissolved in your bodily fluids. Sodium and potassium are positive. Chloride is negative. This charge is what makes them “electrolytes” – they can conduct electrical signals through your body’s fluids.

And here’s why they matter

Electrolytes keep your body’s basic functions running.

Potassium, magnesium, calcium and sodium regulate fluid

balance, nerve signals, and muscle contractions – including your heartbeat.

Your body constantly moves water between compartments – inside cells, outside cells, and in your bloodstream. Electrolytes determine where water goes. Water follows sodium, so when sodium levels shift, fluid distribution shifts with it. This is why eating salty french fries and peanuts make you thirsty!

See how pretty our pops are!

And here’s how they do it

Nerve signaling. This is one of electrolytes’ most critical roles.

Every nerve signal – from your brain commanding your hand to move, to your heart beating naturally – works by rapidly swapping sodium and potassium across a cell membrane. Sodium rushes in and potassium rushes out, creating an electrical pulse that travels down the nerve. Without the right balance, signals misfire or stop entirely.

Electrolytes keep this pulse working properly and prevent dehydration from wreaking havoc. Drinking plain water when you’re dehydrated is not enough! Without electrolytes, your cells can’t actually absorb and use that fluid properly. That’s why foods like our delicious electrolyte ice pops and drinks with our electrolyte powders help so much after intense sweating.

Why else should I care about electrolytes?

Muscles need them. Low potassium or magnesium is a common cause of cramps, weakness and fatigue. Electrolytes can help with leg cramps, especially if your cramps are due to dehydration.

Athletes and anyone, at any age, who works hard and/or plays hard loses significant electrolytes through sweat.

Your brain relies on them. Electrolytes help transmit nerve impulses, so imbalances can cause brain fog, headaches, dizziness or in severe cases, confusion and seizures.

When do you actually need more electrolytes: For most people, eating a normal healthy diet provides most of the electrolytes you need. You benefit from extra electrolytes after exercise, playing hard (especially in heat), illness with vomiting or diarrhea, heavy sweating in heat, preparing for a medical examination such as acolonoscopy, or if you’re on a very low-carb diet (which causes you to excrete more sodium).
